26 – ACOLYTE Disaster!

Could this be the end of DISNEY STAR WARS?

(2024) Not everything (technically) comes together in this tense 90-minute infidelity thriller, but I really enjoy the dramatic roles Daisy Ridley has taken on recently. The film was written by her partner Tom Bateman, and while its setup seems a bit unique, it plays out like any marriage-relationship-bitterness thriller.

But I have questions (burning questions, really)

Asking them would reveal spoilers, so I’ll refrain. Sam Yates gives it the neo-noir treatment, playing to Ridley’s strengths.

The male lead also comes across as a consistently rude and uncaring “man,” let alone a partner or parent

While its viability is a bit questionable, the final twist seems satisfying on paper (and for a moment on screen). Since the film wants to get straight to the point, it clearly lacks texture in all of its characters, with the exception of Ridley’s character, who once again excels in his role.

Still, Magpie is one of those movies that gives you instant gratification, even if you quickly forget about it
